NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS

Neuropsychological Assessments

What is a neuropsychological assessment? A neuropsychological assessment has various objectives, for example:

✅ The neuropsychological evaluation seeks to identify those brain and cognitive areas that show development in accordance with what is expected, and likewise, seeks to detect processes whose functioning is considered weak according to the person's age.

✅ Neuropsychological assessment seeks to explain deficits or disorders based on their association with possible deterioration in brain function.

✅ Neuropsychology seeks to assess neurological development by analyzing the functioning of brain systems and their contribution to the development of simple and complex cognitive functions (sensory functions, visual-spatial processing, attention, memory, learning, executive functions, language, motor skills, and social perception/cognition). This allows us to identify the degree, location, and behavioral consequences of any possible brain impairment.

✅ Neuropsychological evaluation helps when making recommendations to families and schools, so that intervention programs and psychoeducational support services can be contextualized to the individual needs of each person.

✅ Last but not least, neuropsychological assessment is key in any diagnostic process for neurodevelopmental disorders. The most common cases (but not the only ones) are:

  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
  • ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
  • Learning disorders (dysgraphia, dysorthography, dyslexia and dyscalculia).
  • Intellectual disability disorders.
  • Communication disorders.
  • Motor disorders.
