Hot and cold executive functions from neuropsychological assessment

Executive functions are defined as the cognitive capacity that allows us to control, regulate and plan behavior and cognitive processes towards the achievement of purposeful and productive activities.

Apart from the traditional neuropsychological assessment, where sections of executive functions are evaluated from a cognitive perspective, it is also important to consider behavioral and emotional aspects, what is known as hot executive functions, processes responsible for emotional regulation, affective decision-making, social cognition, interpersonal behavior and reward processing.

At Neuropsyedu we offer benchmark assessments regarding the behavioral and emotional evaluation of executive functions, both for the preschool population (BRIEF-P) and for the population enrolled in primary and secondary school (BRIEF-2).

- BRIEF-2 (Behavioral Assessment of Executive Functions): Assessment applied to external informants (family or school), with respect to children and adolescents between the ages of 5-18 years, which allows for the collection of additional information on executive functions that is not usually collected in other traditional office tests, considering everyday, behavioral and emotional aspects. This allows for the measurement of executive performance in real situations, helping to more fully and objectively specify the neuropsychological assessment performed.

- BRIEF-P (Behavioral Assessment of Executive Functions - Child Version): test that allows the measurement, with the collaboration of external informants (family and school), of executive functions in children between 2 years 0 months and 5 years 11 months of age. It measures aspects related to inhibition, flexibility, emotional control, working memory and planning-organization.
